A man from the village of Zupç in the municipality of Zubin Potok has been placed under police detention for up to 48 hours on Tuesday after he was suspected of giving a false statement during an investigation into war crimes.
According to his lawyer, Milosh Deleviq, D.V. was earlier detained at the Brnjak border crossing and taken to provide testimony as a witness in an investigation being conducted by Kosovo’s Special Prosecution regarding war crimes in Zubin Potok.
“He was taken to Brnjak to give his testimony as a witness in the war crimes investigation. Afterwards, the prosecutor decided to initiate proceedings against him on suspicion of giving a false statement, for which he was placed under police detention for up to 48 hours,” the lawyer told the local outlet Zubin Potok INFO, according to KosovaPress.
Deleviq said that D.V. was detained around 1:00 p.m. at the crossing point between Kosovo and Serbia.
The Kosovo Police confirmed that on Tuesday at around 2:30 p.m., a suspect — a male Kosovo citizen — was arrested in North Mitrovica after allegedly making false statements during questioning by police investigators. The police statement said that, by decision of the prosecutor, the suspect was placed in detention, but it did not confirm whether the person was D.V.
Kosovo’s Special Prosecution is currently investigating alleged war crimes in the municipality of Zubin Potok, where excavations are being carried out at several locations believed to potentially contain the remains of Albanians, mainly from the Mitrovica region, who have been missing since the 1999 war.
Three people have already been arrested in connection with this case in Zubin Potok, and a one-month detention measure has been imposed on them.
