The Kosovo Judicial Council (KJC) has scheduled its next meeting for Friday, August 7, 2026, with the agenda including the review of the request submitted by the Acting President of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, regarding the withdrawal of resignations by judges and staff members from the Serbian community.
The agenda contains a total of 16 items, while the review of the withdrawal of resignations is listed as the ninth item, reports Betimi për Drejtësi.
At the previous meeting on July 24, this item was not discussed because the session failed due to a lack of quorum.
Acting President Albulena Haxhiu had sent a letter on June 19, 2026, to the Chairperson of the KJC, Rrustem Thaqi, requesting that the Council resolve the issue of resignations submitted by Serbian community judges and supporting staff within Kosovo’s judicial system.
“Keeping these positions vacant for such a long period undermines legal certainty, prevents the full functioning of the justice system, and affects the efficiency of the responsible institutions,” Haxhiu stated in the letter.
Meanwhile, the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council (KPC), during its meeting on July 20, 2026, rejected the withdrawal of resignations by Serbian prosecutors and support staff within the prosecutorial system and forwarded the matter to the Acting President for their dismissal from office.
A day later, on July 21, Haxhiu announced that she had signed decrees dismissing seven Serbian prosecutors who had submitted their resignations in 2022.
The decision by the KPC and Haxhiu was criticized by the European Union, which said the move appeared to be inconsistent with the law.
“The EU is concerned by yesterday’s decision of the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council to accept resignations that had already been withdrawn, and by today’s decision of the Acting President to decree those resignations. This appears not to be in line with the law, due legal procedures, and general rule-of-law requirements in Kosovo. The EU calls on all relevant institutions to refrain from actions aimed at obstructing the reintegration of Kosovo Serb judicial personnel,” the EU said in its statement.
