Serbian nationalist rhetoric that seeks to justify ethnic cleansing should not be viewed as a series of isolated statements, but as part of a broader political discourse aimed at maintaining influence across the region, according to Mentor Vrajolli, executive director of the Kosovo Center for Security.
Speaking to The Geotalks, Vrajolli said nationalist narratives, Russian influence in the Balkans and hybrid threats continue to pose significant security challenges for Kosovo and the wider region.
He argued that Serbia’s so-called “Serbian world” concept is part of a broader effort to expand political influence beyond Serbia’s borders, while propaganda and hybrid warfare are increasingly being used as instruments to weaken Kosovo’s position and obstruct its progress on the international stage.
Vrajolli called for a stronger and more coordinated strategy to counter hybrid threats, emphasizing the need for Kosovo and its international partners to respond more effectively to disinformation, nationalist narratives and other forms of political influence.
He also addressed the security situation in northern Kosovo, developments following the 2023 Banjska attack and the risk of renewed incidents, while highlighting NATO’s role in maintaining peace and stability.
According to Vrajolli, Kosovo’s security challenges are closely connected to its broader efforts toward Euro-Atlantic integration. He stressed that strengthening institutions, integrating communities and developing effective responses to hybrid warfare are essential to preventing destabilization and protecting Kosovo’s long-term security.
