Kosovo’s political negotiations over the next president have entered a new phase, with Vetëvendosje leader Albin Kurti and LDK chairman Lumir Abdixhiku discussing specific names for the first time.
Speaking after their latest meeting, Kurti said the talks were “open, sincere and serious” and that growing trust between the two sides had allowed them to move beyond general principles and begin considering individual candidates.
Until now, the two parties had focused mainly on the qualities and criteria they believed a future president should meet, including professional experience, civic contribution and commitment to the state.
Kurti said the negotiations would now become more difficult and detailed, as each side could propose candidates and present arguments in their favour. The list would then gradually be narrowed as the parties assess whether consensus is possible.
Neither Kurti nor Abdixhiku disclosed the names discussed during the meeting.
Kurti also stressed that the individuals whose names were considered had not yet been approached to determine whether they would be willing to accept the presidency.
“We first need to reach an agreement among ourselves,” Kurti said, explaining that potential candidates could only be formally approached once the political parties had reached sufficient agreement.
The Vetëvendosje leader said his party would remain transparent about the negotiations with the LDK, while keeping the details of the internal discussions confidential.
Further meetings between Kurti and Abdixhiku are expected as the two parties continue efforts to find a candidate capable of securing the necessary political support to become Kosovo’s next president.
