Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s latest campaign video has gone viral on social media, drawing widespread reactions and a wave of ridicule from users who questioned the staged nature of his latest political appearance.
The footage shows Vučić visiting families in their homes, bringing flowers and engaging in conversations about their jobs, salaries, daily lives and decision to remain in Serbia as the country heads toward snap parliamentary elections.
In one scene, Vučić arrives at a family’s home with flowers and begins asking questions about their financial situation and future plans. He also says he is pleased that the family has chosen to stay in Serbia before asking whether one of its members earns enough for a decent standard of living.
Rather than being received as a conventional political campaign video, however, the footage quickly became the subject of mockery online. Users questioned the presentation and staging of the encounters, with some comparing the scenes to the satirical world of Borat.
Others mocked the highly choreographed nature of Vučić’s appearances in ordinary Serbian homes, portraying the videos as another example of the president’s unusual campaign style.
This is not the first time Vučić has used this type of campaign footage. Ahead of Serbia’s 2023 elections, he appeared in a similar video visiting a family in Leskovac, where he discussed employment, salaries and their decision to remain in the country. That campaign video also generated significant criticism and satire on social media.
The latest footage has once again placed Vučić’s campaign strategy under the spotlight, with online users turning what was intended as a political message into a source of public amusement and satire.
Vučić has announced that he will resign from the presidency on September 27 and subsequently take part in the campaign for Serbia’s snap parliamentary elections, scheduled for October 25.
