Petar Bošković, a member of the presidency of the Serbia Centre (SRCE) party and a candidate on the European Serbia electoral list, has warned that halting Serbia’s European integration at this critical moment would amount to a historic crime against its own people.
Speaking to Glas srca, Bošković said such a decision would erase, with a single stroke of the pen, the efforts of generations of Serbian citizens who have worked tirelessly since the 1990s to secure the country’s full membership in the European Union.
“Serbia has already been set back by irresponsible policies and shamefully placed in the same category as Turkey and Georgia, as a country that has abandoned its European path,” Bošković said.
He also criticised proposals by some opposition figures to hold a referendum on the country’s EU integration, describing such initiatives as dangerous and politically short-sighted, regardless of the motives behind them.
According to Bošković, abandoning the European path would force Serbia back to the beginning of the accession negotiations and into a historical dead end from which it might never recover.
“My generation, people in middle age and those somewhat older, could then forget their dream of living to see Serbia become an equal member of the European family of nations,” he said.
Bošković’s remarks come amid ongoing political debate in Serbia over the country’s European future and proposals concerning the direction of its EU accession process.
