Seventy thousand police officers will be deployed across France to maintain public order in cities during Saturday’s protests, scheduled for October 31, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced today.

The French interior minister said police would respond with exceptional firmness if violent incidents occur during the demonstrations or after they end.

Nuñez said far-left groups had used social media to call for violent gatherings on that day.

The protests coincide with Halloween. Nuñez had previously warned that “Halloween night has traditionally always been a turbulent one.”
