The professor of the Center for Geopolitics at the University of Cambridge, Timothy Less, said that the extension of Lajcak’s mandate was done more for bureaucratic reasons than for politics.
“The mandate of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, will end in October and he would like to allow his successor to choose a new mediator. If Mr. Lajcak expresses his will to stay until January next year, then there is no obstacle for this.
