The professor of the Center for Geopolitics at the University of Cambridge, Timothy Less, said that the extension of Lajcak’s mandate was done more for bureaucratic reasons than for politics.

“The mandate of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, will end in October and he would like to allow his successor to choose a new mediator. If Mr. Lajcak expresses his will to stay until January next year, then there is no obstacle for this. In the meantime, there is always an opportunity to achieve something in dialogue”, said Less for “Blic”.

Pahor stated that “something obviously changed in Brussels, but I don’t know the reason” and Les says that “it seems to me that Pahor is a victim of the bureaucracy”.

“We don’t know how close he was to secure the mediator’s position, he says that Mr. Lajcak invited him, but the decision in the end belongs to the High Representative and the European Council. This does not rule out that Pahor will take the post, of course, but it means that he must first convince Borrell’s successor, Kaya Kallas, of his merits,” said Less.
