NATO is the largest military alliance in the world, and while much is known about it, one thing that many might not know is why OTAN appears alongside the name in the logo of this alliance.
Although many thought it was the name of the organization, the explanation is different in retrospect. OTAN is actually the acronym for the name of this military organization in French.
In French, the “North Atlantic Treaty Organization” (NATO) is called “Organisation du traité de l’Atlantique nord” (OTAN).
The official languages of this alliance are English and French, which is why the acronym appears in both languages on the logo.
It is also worth noting that Mons, the administrative center of NATO, is located in Mons, a Belgian city situated in Wallonia, a region where French is predominantly spoken.
