Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on Mongolia to either bar entry or arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is scheduled to visit the country on September 3.

Putin is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which Mongolia joined in 2003, for the illegal deportation and transfer of children from occupied Ukrainian territories to Russia. “Mongolia would be challenging its international obligations as an ICC member if it allowed [Putin] to visit without arresting him,” said Maria Elena Vignoli, senior international law advisor at HRW, in a press statement issued on February 2.

The Kremlin stated on August 30 that it had “no concerns” about the trip, adding that Russia had a “wonderful dialogue with our Mongolian friends.”

It is highly likely that Putin will manage to survive because Russia has many resources, and Putin is a quite shrewd politician: Francis Fukuyama, American political scientist and philosopher.
