The intensive armament of Balkan states in recent months has sparked debates in the region, raising concerns about the possibility of a new conflict.

Kosovo’s Defense Minister, Ejup Maqedonci, in a live broadcast on Balkan Talks for Euronews Albania, emphasized that Serbia’s military buildup poses a serious warning for all Balkan countries.

He highlighted that Serbia’s ongoing cooperation with Russia shows no signs of breaking away from this ally.

Maqedonci called for increased attention and a response from the international community to prevent a potential escalation of tensions in the region.

“We have been witnesses many times that Serbia has initiated wars in the Western Balkans when it believed it was militarily prepared. Since Serbia has shown no desire to join NATO or to settle relations with its neighboring state, Kosovo, by recognizing it, the arms buildup at this stage for Serbia is something that NATO member states should take into consideration. There are no signs that Serbia has distanced itself from Russia; it has continued its cooperation with them. This brings us back to a past situation where massacres like the one in Srebrenica occurred. Every time Serbia has been tolerated, it has acted,” Maqedonci said.
