German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized the significance of the United States’ recent decision to allow Ukraine to use American-made long-range weapons for strikes deep inside Russian territory. Baerbock made the statement ahead of a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Brussels, noting that while the move is critical, it does not signal a change in Western strategy.
“The decision from the American side, and I must stress, this is not a change of mind but an intensification of the support that partners have already provided, is extremely important at this time,” Baerbock remarked.
U.S. Eases Restrictions on Long-Range Weapon Use
According to The New York Times, Associated Press, and Reuters, President Joe Biden’s administration lifted previous restrictions on the use of these weapons, though the White House and National Security Council have yet to comment officially. This policy shift could mark a significant escalation in U.S. military support for Ukraine. Kyiv has been requesting long-range strike capabilities from Washington for some time.
Ukraine’s Preparedness and Zelensky’s Response
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky refrained from confirming the reports but mentioned the strategic importance of long-range weapons in Ukraine’s “victory plan” presented to Western allies. “Today, the media says we have permission for appropriate actions. But militaries do not strike with words. These things are not announced. The missiles will speak for themselves,” Zelensky stated on Telegram.
Reuters further reported that Ukraine is expected to carry out its first long-range strikes in the coming days, though no specific details were provided.
Focus on ATACMS
Sources indicate that Ukraine will likely deploy ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System), a powerful, hypersonic, and ballistic missile capable of traveling up to 300 kilometers. The ATACMS system, known for its strategic reach, would be a game-changer on the battlefield, giving Ukraine a significant advantage.
If verified, the use of these missiles could signal a pivotal moment in the conflict, as Ukraine seeks to respond to Russian offensives and secure critical military objectives.
