With 370 votes in favor, 282 against, and 38 abstentions, the European Parliament voted on Wednesday to approve the new composition of the European Commission, which will be led by Ursula von der Leyen.
In her introductory speech, outlining the leaders of the EU’s departments for the next five years, the German politician stated that “European sovereignty is not for sale” and that they will make Europe both secure and strong.
When addressing the EU’s enlargement to include Kosovo, Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bosnia, Serbia, Ukraine, and Moldova, she spoke more directly than ever before. She also sent a clear message to Russia, led by Vladimir Putin.
“We have seen the commitment of the Western Balkans to reform, grow, and get ready to join the EU. At the same time, we have seen how Russia does everything it can to stop them from having a European future. But Europe’s commitment to these countries will always be strong. And without a doubt, we want Ukraine to be part of our union,” von der Leyen said.
The new European Commissioner for Enlargement, starting officially on December 1, will be Slovenian politician, Marta Kos.
Meanwhile, former Estonian Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, will be the new head of EU diplomacy and security.
Regarding Kallas, von der Leyen added, “She is the right person at the right time, for diplomacy and Europe’s interests in the world.”
