The Special Appeal Court (GJKKO) will examine today the appeal from the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK), which seeks the return of the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, to house arrest. The appeal is set to be heard at 10:00 AM.
Berisha, the head of the Democratic Party, was released from house arrest on November 27, 2024. The Special Court revoked the house arrest measure for Berisha, with the decision made by Judge Flojera Davidhi. Berisha’s lawyer, Genc Gjokutaj, confirmed that no other security measures were imposed on him. On the same day, the prosecution had requested that Berisha remain under house arrest.
On December 30, 2023, the Special Court announced it had placed Berisha under house arrest as he, along with his son-in-law Jamarbër Malltezi (currently under house arrest), is being investigated for the privatization of the former Partizani Sports Complex.
Earlier, Berisha had rejected the measures imposed by SPAK, including the obligation to report and the ban on traveling abroad, considering them unconstitutional. After these measures were not followed, the Special Prosecution strengthened the security measure for Berisha by keeping him under house arrest.
The Special Court ordered Berisha to remain at his residence and not communicate with anyone except those who live with him in the same household. SPAK and judicial police services were assigned to enforce this measure.
