The Information and Privacy Agency (AIP) of Kosovo has urged political parties to adhere to legal obligations and protect citizens’ personal data during the campaign for the February 9, 2025, elections.
In an official statement, AIP emphasized the importance of safeguarding personal information to ensure compliance with legal requirements and respect for the privacy of Kosovo’s citizens.
“To fulfill its legal mandate of protecting citizens’ personal data, the Information and Privacy Agency calls on political parties to safeguard personal information during the electoral campaign,” the statement read.
Addressing Unauthorized Use of Data
AIP highlighted prior instances where political parties allegedly misused personal data by engaging in unauthorized direct marketing through phone calls and messages without prior consent. The agency stated it had handled complaints from citizens in recent years regarding such breaches.
“In its oversight role, the agency has dealt with cases of unauthorized use of personal data in accordance with the law,” AIP noted.
To prevent violations, the agency explicitly requested that political parties refrain from exposing personal information through emails, SMS, or phone calls without explicit prior consent.
Commitment to Collaboration
AIP expressed its willingness to collaborate with political entities to ensure compliance with privacy laws. It also emphasized that personal data collected during voter registration or campaign communication activities must strictly adhere to legal requirements.
“Any personal information gathered during voter registration or campaign activities must be used in accordance with the law,” the agency concluded.
Safeguarding Citizens’ Privacy
This statement from AIP serves as a critical reminder for political entities to prioritize privacy and adhere to ethical standards, reflecting the broader commitment to protecting the rights of Kosovo’s citizens during a pivotal democratic process.
