Another wildfire broke out southeast of Athens this morning, with strong winds fueling the rapid spread of the flames and complicating firefighting efforts.
The fire was reported in Kouvaras, around 60 kilometers from the Greek capital, in the Attica region. According to the fire service, at least 172 firefighters and around 40 vehicles have been deployed to battle the blaze.
Ground crews are being supported by two firefighting aircraft and four helicopters as authorities attempt to contain the fire.
The operation is taking place under extremely difficult conditions, with winds reaching speeds of more than 70 kilometers per hour, increasing the risk of the flames spreading rapidly.
Civil protection authorities ordered the evacuation of the village of Agios Stylianos, located near the fire, as a precaution against the advancing flames.
The incident marks the second major wildfire near Athens this summer, adding to growing concerns over Greece’s increasingly severe wildfire season.
