The potential return of mandatory military service in Albania has been a topic of discussion, according to Xhemal Qefalia, Deputy Chair of the Security Commission. He indicated that a legal initiative could be introduced in the future to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities.

Qefalia emphasized that revitalizing military factories and reinforcing the Armed Forces are critical components of enhancing national security. He suggested that a mandatory military service period of 3 to 6 months could significantly contribute to these efforts.

“Attention to defense is a positive step, and Albania is making strides in this area. Reactivating military factories will not only serve the needs of the Albanian army but also create opportunities for export. Moreover, a short period of mandatory military service, as seen in many countries, could address regional and territorial security concerns,” Qefalia stated.

He also highlighted the recently approved law on reservists, which allows citizens to be called upon for up to 45 days a year with financial compensation. However, he noted that mandatory military service could provide more comprehensive national security benefits.

“If my colleagues in the Socialist Party support it, I would gladly propose this initiative. It would be a valuable contribution to our national security,” he added.
