The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke at the EU Ambassadors’ Conference and could not avoid addressing the issue of Donald Trump’s threats against the bloc.
Describing the relationship as “the cornerstone of peace and prosperity” and emphasizing that “no other economy in the world is as integrated, in such an advanced manner,” which constitutes almost 30% of global trade, she stated that her focus was to make it work.
However, as this might not be easy under Trump, she seems to have a plan, writes The Guardian.
“Our first priority now is to work in many areas where our interests converge. And there is still room to do much more – from critical supply chains to emerging technologies.”
“We will be ready for tough negotiations where necessary and to find solutions where possible, to resolve any complaints and to lay the foundations for a stronger partnership.”
However, in a rather strong remark at the end, she stated that there will be limits to the EU’s “open and pragmatic” approach.
“We will make it clear that we will always protect our interests – whatever it takes and whenever this is necessary. This will always be the European way.”
