King Charles III has formally accepted the resignation of Keir Starmer as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, marking the end of his tenure in office and paving the way for Andy Burnham to become the country’s new leader.
Following his final address as prime minister, Starmer traveled to Buckingham Palace, where he met with King Charles III and officially submitted his resignation.
In his farewell speech, Starmer wished his successor success and pledged his full support.
“He has my full support. I leave with courtesy, I leave with a smile, and I am proud of everything we have achieved,” Starmer said, according to CNN.
Andy Burnham is now expected to be formally appointed by King Charles III as the new Prime Minister before delivering his first address outside 10 Downing Street.
Burnham will then begin forming a new government and is expected to outline his administration’s priorities in the coming days.
The leadership transition comes without a general election, as the United Kingdom’s parliamentary system allows the governing party to elect a new leader who automatically becomes prime minister as long as they command a majority in the House of Commons.
