European leaders will attempt to reach an agreement on new military aid for Ukraine at a special summit scheduled for March 6, according to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell. Europe is seeking to strengthen its support for Kyiv in response to ongoing negotiations between the U.S. and Russia regarding the war in Ukraine.
Kaja Kalas, a prominent EU official, proposed that the 27 European member states commit to delivering new weapons as soon as possible, including rockets, anti-aircraft defense systems, and artillery shells.
Foreign ministers from EU member states meeting in Brussels today largely supported this new initiative, Kalas stated. “The details, particularly regarding the amounts, will be decided and discussed during the extraordinary European summit on March 6,” she added.
However, discussions are complicated by opposition from Hungary, which has remained closely aligned with Moscow, especially when it comes to providing additional military assistance to Kyiv amid ongoing U.S.-Russia talks. Since the start of the war, European countries have already provided Ukraine with €134 billion in aid, of which nearly €50 billion has been military support.
