The Italian Senate has approved the pension agreement with Albania with 129 votes in favor and none against, benefiting both Albanian citizens living in Italy and Italian citizens residing in Albania.
Around 500,000 Albanian citizens living and working in Italy and approximately 4,000 Italians with residence permits in Albania will benefit from this agreement.
According to the agreement, Albanian citizens living in Italy or Italians in Albania will benefit from the General Mandatory Insurance for disability, old age, and family pensions for employees, special treatment for self-employed individuals such as artisans, traders, farmers, and insurance for sickness benefits, including coverage for tuberculosis and maternity, as well as unemployment insurance.
With the entry into force of the agreement, individuals approaching retirement age must apply to the respective Social Security Institute (Albanians in Italy and Italians in Albania), allowing them to receive two pensions based on the years of work and contributions they have made.
Additionally, Albanians who retired before 2024 can apply to benefit from this agreement.
The agreement guarantees that no citizen will lose any days of contributions, regardless of where they have worked, and it creates the legal conditions for pension benefits in both countries.
