“We are entering a new era.” With these words, President Emmanuel Macron addressed the French people this evening from the Elysee, describing how the United States has changed its stance on the war in Ukraine and threatened Europe with rising trade tariffs.
“I am addressing you this evening due to the international situation. You are legitimately concerned, given the historic events happening. The United States has changed its position on the war in Ukraine. The United States itself wants to impose tariffs on Europe. There is the threat of terrorism. We are entering a new era,” said Macron, as reported by A2 CNN.
In his speech to the nation, the French president warned that the security of both France and Europe is also threatened by Putin’s invasion.
“Who can believe that Russia will stop in Ukraine? Faced with this world at risk, to remain a spectator would be madness. Russia has become a threat to France and Europe. The situation I’m describing to you is this, and we must live with it. And the path to peace cannot be without Ukraine. Peace cannot be the surrender of Ukraine. We cannot forget that Russia started the invasion of Ukraine in 2014,” Macron stated.
Macron emphasized that France, together with Ukraine and other European countries, has prepared a “strong and sustainable peace plan,” and that once peace is achieved, European peacekeepers could be deployed to secure it.
