Following the coalition agreement between Germany’s conservatives and social democrats, Friedrich Merz — the country’s likely next chancellor — sent a clear message to U.S. President Donald Trump.
Speaking in English, Merz stated, “The main message… is: Germany is back on the right path.”
He emphasized that Germany would fulfill its defense obligations and strengthen its competitiveness. “And it’s not just Germany; it’s Europe, the European Union, and Germany will once again be a very strong partner within the European Union. We will move the European Union forward,” Merz added.
Lars Klingbeil of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) echoed Merz’s comments, saying, “I fully agree.”
