The Prime Minister of France, François Bayrou, has warned that it is a “terribly dangerous idea” to think China could replace the United States as a major trade partner.
Bayrou called for a united stance among European Union member states in response to the uncertainty created by US President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
“When the President of the United States raises tariffs, it’s an earthquake, but when 48 hours later he lifts them, it’s another earthquake,” Bayrou said, emphasizing the unpredictability and consequences of the Trump administration’s trade policies.
This statement follows a series of reactions from French authorities concerning US tariffs. Earlier, President Emmanuel Macron described the temporary 90-day suspension of tariffs as an “open door” for potential negotiations with the United States.
