Beijing calls on the Trump administration to end all reciprocal tariffs as the trade war between the world’s two largest economies intensifies.
China has called on the United States to fully cancel reciprocal tariffs and return to the path of mutual respect. The statement from China’s Ministry of Commerce came after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause on several planned global tariffs, while simultaneously raising tariffs on Chinese imports to 145%.
“We urge the U.S. to take major steps to correct its mistakes, completely abandon the wrong practice of ‘reciprocal tariffs,’ and return to the right path of mutual respect,” the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.
On Friday, the Trump administration offered a concession by announcing that certain technology products — including many manufactured in China — would be exempt from the new tariffs.
China’s Ministry of Commerce described the exemptions as only a “small step” and said Beijing is currently “assessing the impact” of the move.
The tariff exemptions, which cover smartphones, computers, and semiconductors, have given some hope to tech giants and consumers worried that device prices would skyrocket as a result of the trade war, according to a BBC report.
