The main European powers have presented the United States with their firm positions on several key issues in any potential peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. The statement was made by France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot ahead of a new round of talks expected to take place in London on Wednesday, reports Rks News.
Last week, in Paris, Ukraine, the US, France, the UK, and Germany met for the first time since the election of US President Donald Trump. They shared their perspectives on possible ways to end the conflict, which has now entered its fourth year.
High-ranking officials, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will continue discussions this week in London, according to news agency “Reuters”.
“The only objective that concerns us is to protect French interests and European security. This is why, while the US decides to position itself as a mediator, we are making sure they hear our red lines,” said the French foreign minister, without providing further details on specific issues.
When asked about the possibility of President Trump announcing a peace agreement this week, Barrot emphasized that the process depends on Moscow’s willingness: “I think the (Easter) ceasefire that he (Putin) unexpectedly decreed was some sort of marketing operation, a tactic to keep President Trump from losing patience.”
According to him, although the ceasefire was accompanied by violations, a reduction in the intensity of drone and rocket attacks has been observed, which could create space for deeper discussions about a possible ceasefire.
