At least eight migrants have lost their lives after their boat sank off the coast of Tunisia.

According to a security official, 29 people were rescued by the coast guard, while it is believed the journey was intended towards Europe.

The shipwreck occurred near the city of Abouabed, close to Sfax, a common departure point for African migrants seeking to cross the Mediterranean.

Rescue operations are underway to locate the missing individuals, said National Guard official Hussem Eddin Jebabil.

Tunisia is facing an unprecedented migration crisis, having replaced Libya as a key departure point for both Tunisians and other African migrants seeking a better life in Europe.
