The Kosovo Police Union has expressed concern over the way cases involving police officers are reported, especially in tragic situations or incidents still under investigation. In a public statement, the Union emphasized its moral and institutional duty to respond in order to protect the dignity and integrity of its members.

The Union strongly condemned the statement made by journalist Branislav Krstić, who, in a local media outlet, denied the killing of officer Afrim Bunjaku, who fell in the line of duty on September 24, 2023, during a terrorist attack in the North of the country. According to the Union, this stance represents “a serious insult to his memory and the sacrifice of a hero.”

Additionally, the Union condemned attempts to involve officer Muhamet Lika in conspiracy theories related to his death. Lika was regarded as a freedom fighter, a distinguished member of the Kosovo Police, and a dedicated member of the Union. “These attempts are unacceptable and represent an attempt to derail investigations and tarnish his image,” the statement reads.

Another concerning issue raised by the Union is the premature publication of names and photographs of police officers in the media and on social networks, before investigations are concluded. “When a police officer is later declared innocent, there is no equal public response to clear his name. This has created a sense of injustice and insecurity among our officers,” the statement continues.

At the end of the statement, the Union emphasizes that it does not seek to limit press freedom but calls for responsibility, ethics, and caution in reporting. It appeals that in cases where officers are publicly shown without basis and later declared innocent, public retractions should be made with the same intensity as the initial news dissemination.

“The Kosovo Police Union remains committed to protecting the integrity and dignity of every member and is always open to cooperation with media outlets that operate with professionalism and objectivity,” the statement concludes.
