Germany’s conservative bloc (CDU/CSU), led by incoming Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) officially signed their coalition agreement on Monday, paving the way for a new government. Merz is expected to be sworn in on Tuesday, ending a six-month political deadlock.
The coalition has pledged to revive Germany’s struggling economy, rebuild its military, curb irregular immigration, and counter the growing popularity of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). The 144-page agreement, titled “Responsibility for Germany,” outlines a four-year plan of reforms and investments aimed at strengthening Germany’s voice in Europe and globally.
