On his first day in office, newly appointed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz embarked on a significant diplomatic mission, visiting Paris and Warsaw. His reception in France was warm and symbolically important, reflecting his longstanding political ties with the country.
Merz Meets Macron in Paris
At the Élysée Palace, Merz and President Emmanuel Macron announced a strategic renewal in defense cooperation between Germany and France. In a joint press conference, Merz stated:
“All EU member states must increase their defense spending. Only through collective effort can we close our capability gaps and continue to support Ukraine effectively.”
Strengthening European Security
Key outcomes from the meeting include:
- Plans to enhance bilateral arms cooperation
- A commitment to strengthen the Franco-German Defense Council
- A joint Franco-German Defense and Security Council to meet regularly and respond to Europe’s strategic challenges
Merz emphasized that Germany is ready to act, not just in defense production, but also diplomatically, expressing support for peace in Ukraine.
Planned Visit to Ukraine
Merz revealed intentions to visit Ukraine in the coming weeks, coordinated with EU partners, to support a durable ceasefire and move toward a peace agreement with Russia. He underscored the importance of U.S. involvement in the security guarantees for Ukraine, affirming Germany’s willingness to assist in monitoring any ceasefire, under American leadership.
🇪🇺 Rekindling the Franco-German Engine
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, accompanying Merz, said the goal was to revive the Franco-German axis, traditionally the foundation of EU integration and unity. With economic and political instability in recent months, both Berlin and Paris seek to reaffirm their commitment to European cooperation and strategic alignment.
Poland, visited later in the day, was also highlighted as crucial in the Weimar Triangle—the tripartite alliance between Germany, France, and Poland—aimed at reinforcing Eastern European security.
Trump’s Role and Transatlantic Relations
Merz reiterated the importance of U.S. engagement, stating:
“President Trump has our full support in ending the war. Once a ceasefire is reached, Germany stands ready to contribute to its supervision, together with the United States.”
Macron echoed this sentiment, affirming that France and Germany would continue to work together for peace in Ukraine, signaling a renewed strategic partnership at a pivotal moment for Europe.
