Albanian MP in the Serbian Parliament, Shaip Kamberi, has publicly condemned the vandalism of the statue of Commander Lleshi in the municipality of Bujanoc, calling it a direct attack on the entire Albanian community in the region.
“The attack on Commander Lleshi’s statue is an attack on every Albanian in Bujanoc. Damaging his figure means destroying every attempt to build equality and justice,” Kamberi wrote in a Facebook post.
He linked the act to chauvinistic policies stemming from both central Serbian political figures and their local allies, whom he referred to as “satellites.”
In closing, Kamberi urged judicial institutions to act swiftly:
“I call on judicial authorities to fully investigate the case and issue the deserved punishment for those responsible.”
The incident has sparked renewed tensions and concerns over interethnic respect and the protection of historical memory in southern Serbia.
