The European Union and the United Kingdom announced new rounds of sanctions against Russia on Tuesday, intensifying pressure amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas confirmed on X that the EU has adopted its 17th package of sanctions, focusing on nearly 200 ships from Russia’s so-called shadow fleet — vessels used to circumvent sanctions and oil price caps.
“The new measures also address hybrid threats and human rights abuses,” Kallas wrote, warning that more sanctions are coming:
“The longer Russia continues this war, the harsher our response will be.”
Meanwhile, the UK Government announced 100 new sanctions targeting sectors including Russia’s military, energy, finance, and disinformation apparatus.
In a press release, the British government emphasized its coordinated efforts with international partners to strengthen the oil price cap, aiming to further cut funding to Putin’s war machine.
These moves are part of a broader strategy to isolate Moscow economically and strategically, particularly as Russia continues its aggression in Ukraine and exploits alternative channels to sustain its military operations.
