U.S. President Donald Trump has officially confirmed the selection of a design for a new missile defense system called the “Golden Dome,” which he claims will become operational by the end of his second presidential term.
Just days after returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump introduced his vision for building an advanced air defense system, aimed at countering the most sophisticated threats, including ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles, according to a report by the BBC.
An initial budget of $25 billion has been allocated through a new legislative bill, while the total expenditure is projected to reach approximately $175 billion over the coming decades.
American officials emphasize that current defense systems are no longer adequate in the face of rapidly developing military technologies by potential adversaries. In response, the Trump administration has appointed General Michael Guetlein of the U.S. Space Force to oversee the ambitious project.
Speaking from the Oval Office on Tuesday, President Trump said the system will incorporate next-generation technology across land, sea, and space, utilizing sensors and interceptors based in orbit.
He also revealed that Canada has expressed interest in joining the system, suggesting the project could take on an international dimension.
Trump asserted that the system will be able to “intercept missiles launched from the other side of the world or even from space,” drawing comparisons to Israel’s Iron Dome. However, the “Golden Dome” is expected to be far more advanced, capable of neutralizing threats such as hypersonic weapons and Fractional Orbital Bombardment Systems (FOBS).
“Everything will be shot down from the sky. The success rate is very close to 100%,” Trump declared confidently.
According to U.S. defense officials, the system will be able to neutralize threats at all stages, including even pre-launch phases. This new initiative is expected to mark one of the most ambitious national defense undertakings in modern U.S. history.
