Former President of Kosovo, Fatmir Sejdiu, has voiced serious concern over the ongoing political impasse in the country, stressing that the blockage in electing the Speaker of the Assembly represents an unprecedented institutional and political crisis. He warns that the prolonged deadlock is paralyzing parliamentary life and hindering the formation of a new government.

The blockage in electing the head of the Assembly of Kosovo presents an unusual institutional and political situation. After more than 21 unsuccessful attempts, the Assembly remains non-functional, which directly paralyzes parliamentary operations and delays the establishment of a new government,” Sejdiu stated.

According to him, the current situation reflects a lack of political consensus and willingness to compromise.

This state of affairs shows a clear absence of political consensus and readiness for compromise, directly damaging institutional stability and the public’s trust in the democratic process,” Sejdiu emphasized.

He urged both the governing and opposition parties to engage in serious dialogue and demonstrate political maturity and flexibility to overcome the crisis.

“There is an urgent need for both the ruling coalition and the opposition to show political maturity and flexibility, by engaging in serious dialogue to reach an agreement. Inter-party cooperation is the key to unlocking the situation and restoring normal institutional functionality,” he said.

Sejdiu further warned that if the crisis continues, not only will the functioning of the Assembly and the formation of the government be at risk, but Kosovo’s overall political stability may be jeopardized.

If the crisis persists, the consequences could include early elections, a deeper crisis of trust in institutions, and damage to Kosovo’s international image. Our society needs functional institutions and a shared political commitment that responds to citizens’ expectations for development, stability, and democratic progress. Only through public peace, cooperation, and mutual understanding can we build a secure and sustainable future for our country.”
