Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay remains in intensive care after being shot three times, twice in the head, during a rally in the capital, Bogota, on Saturday.

Uribe Turbay, a 39-year-old senator, was attacked while addressing supporters in a park. Police arrested a 15-year-old suspect at the scene, the prosecutor general’s office confirmed, as reported by the BBC.

Uribe’s wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, appealed to the nation to pray for his survival, stating: “Miguel is currently fighting for his life. Let us ask God to guide the hands of the doctors who are treating him.”

Uribe’s Centro Democrático party condemned the attack, calling it a threat to “democracy and freedom in Colombia.” He was airlifted to the Fundacion Santa Fe Hospital, where supporters gathered for a vigil. Bogota Mayor Carlos Fernando Galan stated late Saturday evening that Uribe was rushed to surgery while in critical condition.

The hospital confirmed Sunday morning that Uribe had undergone procedures on his head and left thigh before being transferred to intensive care for stabilization. He continues to be in an extremely serious condition.

According to local media, the 15-year-old suspect was shot in the leg as police and security officers pursued him after the attack.
