German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for restraint from both Iran and Israel to avoid further escalation of the conflict, warning of the risk of destabilizing the entire region, reports RKS News.
In an official statement, Merz said he had been briefed about the Israeli military operation by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu through a phone call on Friday morning, according to the Associated Press.
Merz emphasized that Germany is prepared to use all diplomatic tools to influence the parties involved in the conflict, adding that “the goal must remain to prevent Iran from developing and using nuclear weapons.”
He also reiterated Israel’s right to defend its existence and the security of its citizens, while announcing that German authorities will increase security measures for Jewish and Israeli sites in the country.
