European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, emphasizing the urgent need for a negotiated solution to the escalating crisis with Iran and for a de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
“I reaffirmed our commitment to peace and stability. Israel has the right to defend itself, but escalation must be avoided. Iran is the main source of regional instability and must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. A diplomatic solution must be found as soon as possible,” von der Leyen wrote on X.
She also raised deep concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, calling it “unacceptable”, and urged Netanyahu to guarantee full access to humanitarian aid and show restraint in military operations.
