European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen stated that in a Sunday phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, she emphasized that diplomacy is the best long-term solution to the conflict with Iran.
However, the EC President did not call for an immediate ceasefire, reiterating that “Iran obviously should not have nuclear weapons.” “But of course, I think that a negotiated solution, in the long term, is the best solution,” Ursula von der Leyen added on the first day of the G7 summit in Canada, which includes the U.S., Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, and the EU.
Ursula von der Leyen said that Netanyahu promised to do more to deliver aid to the war-torn Gaza Strip.
“I insisted that humanitarian aid that is not reaching the Gaza Strip must enter that territory. He (Netanyahu) promised he would,” she told reporters in Kananaskis, western Canada, where the G7 summit is being held.
