It has been one week since Arbnor Spahiu, a former member of the Kosovo Police Special Unit, was arrested by Serbian authorities at the border between Hungary and Serbia, in Horgoš. Following his arrest, Serbian authorities ordered a one-month detention for the former police officer. Spahiu is suspected of committing the criminal offense of “aggravated murder” in Banjska, the location where an armed group of Serbs attacked the Kosovo Police in September 2023, killing Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku.

Lawyer Arianit Koci informed Telegrafi that an appeal regarding this matter was submitted at the end of last week.

“The appeal has been submitted, and a decision is expected within two or three days. If there is any justice, Arbnor will be released very soon,” Koci stated.

Days ago, the lawyer mentioned that the indictment against the former Special Unit member was filed by the Serbian BIA.

Kosovo authorities have announced that they are fully engaged in securing his release. Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti recently visited the family of the former police officer, assuring them that efforts are maximal and will continue until his release.

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani also reacted to Arbnor Spahiu’s arrest, calling the action arbitrary and politically motivated. Osmani stated that the arrests of Kosovo citizens by Serbia during border crossings are actions similar to those of the chauvinistic regimes of the 1990s.

In light of the intermittent arrests of Kosovo citizens, authorities consistently urge them to avoid traveling through Serbia.
