Kosovo’s caretaker government has laid the foundation stones for two new bridges over the Ibër River, which separates South Mitrovica from the North—one intended for pedestrians and the other for vehicular traffic.

In response, NATO’s peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR, stated that the recent matters raised regarding this project fall outside of its mandate.

In an official response to Tëvë1, KFOR emphasized that it continues to maintain a permanent presence at the existing bridge over the Ibër River in Mitrovica, alongside regular patrols in the surrounding area to ensure safety and calm for all citizens.

“KFOR also maintains a visible and flexible presence in North Mitrovica and across Kosovo and stands ready to respond to any significant security developments in the interest of all communities in Kosovo,” the statement reads.

The mission reaffirmed that it continues to operate under its mandate in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244, acting impartially and in close coordination with the Kosovo Police and EULEX.

Meanwhile, the caretaker government stated that the project, valued at approximately €3 million, aims to ease traffic flow and foster cooperation between citizens on both sides of the river.
