U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed uncertainty over his ability to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, stepping back from his earlier campaign promise to quickly bring the conflict to an end, RKS News reports.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he could not guarantee he’ll be able to resolve the war but insisted that peace should come as soon as possible.

During his previous campaign, Trump had promised to end the war on day one of taking office, a statement he now refers to as “an exaggeration.”

Trump recently held separate phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, describing his talk with Zelensky as “very good and strategic”, while admitting the call with Putin yielded no progress.

He criticized Russia’s ongoing aggression, saying he was dissatisfied with Putin’s stance and reiterated his commitment to helping Ukraine, though he acknowledged that some U.S. arms shipments had been paused by the Pentagon.

“The U.S. continues to provide military aid,” Trump said, “and we are working hard to support Ukraine in this war.”
