The Hydro-Meteorological Institute of Kosovo (IHMK) has announced that a hot week is expected across Kosovo.
Heatwave Origin and Impact
This situation is a result of hot air masses originating from North Africa. These air masses, characterized by very high temperatures and low humidity, are a consequence of atmospheric circulations favoring the movement of tropical air northward. Specifically, according to IHMK, a high-pressure system located in the central and southern Mediterranean has created conditions for the flow of a continental subtropical air mass from the Sahara desert towards the Balkan Peninsula.
IHMK notes that this meteorological phenomenon often occurs during summer months and is typically associated with extreme temperature increases, significant reductions in rainfall, and an increased risk of drought and fires in forested areas and agricultural fields. Temperatures could easily exceed seasonal averages, causing heatwaves that negatively impact public health.
UV Index and Health Warnings
The UV index will be high, so it’s advised to limit direct sun exposure between 9 AM and 5 PM. The elderly, children, and individuals with chronic illnesses remain most at risk.
