In commemoration of the 14th anniversary of the death of Hero Enver Zymeri and the Memorial Day for police officers who died in the line of duty, acting Minister of Internal Affairs Xhelal Sveçla and Kosovo Police Director Colonel Gazmend Hoxha laid wreaths at the Memorial of Fallen Officers at the General Directorate of Kosovo Police in Prishtina.
Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, in his remarks during the ceremony, expressed deep sorrow, longing, and pride for the fallen officers, emphasizing that the Kosovo Police is a strong force of nearly 10,000 members who serve law and public safety without discrimination.
“We are here at the memorial of the officers who died in the line of duty — 24 in total in post-war Kosovo. I want to highlight our heroes Enver Zymeri and Afrim Bunjaku who died in service, defending state sovereignty, territorial integrity, law and order, peace and safety in northern Kosovo,” Kurti said.
He added that the Memorial Day is specifically tied to Zymeri’s heroic death on July 26, 2011, and noted the continuing dedication of the police force.
“Today we feel pain and sorrow, but also pride, because Kosovo Police stands strong with its 10,000 officers who uphold the Republic and ensure law and peace for all citizens,” Kurti continued.
Kurti also emphasized the multethnic composition of the police and its resilience in the face of many challenges.
“The Kosovo Police is a multethnic force that has been attacked many times, yet has always emerged victorious. One of the most significant structural attacks occurred in November 2022, when 541 uniformed officers from the Serb community resigned en masse. Still, this did not weaken the police, as each generation brings new cadets,” Kurti stated.
He concluded by paying tribute to Enver Zymeri, Afrim Bunjaku, and all officers who have fallen in the line of duty.
