Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stated that while she strongly supports the creation of a Palestinian state, its formal recognition before it is fully established could lead to unintended consequences and potentially harm the peace process.

“I am very much in favor of a Palestinian state, but I do not agree that it should be recognized before it is actually established,” Meloni told the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

She further explained, “If something that does not yet exist is recognized on paper, it can create the impression that the problem is solved, when in fact it is not.”

Meloni’s comments come amid increasing international pressure and debate over whether recognizing a Palestinian state unilaterally—outside the framework of a negotiated two-state solution—could accelerate peace or complicate diplomatic efforts.
