Russian President Vladimir Putin described his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska on Friday as “useful and timely.”

In a post-meeting press conference, Putin said the discussions were “sincere and substantive,” covering key issues in bilateral relations as well as the ongoing war in Ukraine.

He emphasized that Russia “respects the U.S. position on the conflict in Ukraine.”

Putin also noted that the meeting addressed the need to eliminate the “causes” of the conflict—a phrase analysts interpret as signaling that Russia does not intend to abandon its demands regarding Ukraine, including keeping it out of NATO and limiting its integration with the West.
