U.S. President Donald Trump stated that it would be “a big day at the White House,” just hours before his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders to discuss ending the fighting in Ukraine.
“We have never had so many European leaders here at the same time. A great honor for America!!” he wrote.
The Washington talks are expected to include Trump, Zelensky, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
These discussions follow Trump’s summit in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15. Neither leader revealed much about the content of those talks during a brief press conference, where no questions were allowed.
However, Western media have reported that Putin proposed a peace agreement involving Ukraine withdrawing from a large territory in the Donbas region.
This has raised alarm in Kyiv and European capitals, which fear that withdrawal from fortified areas could leave Ukraine dangerously exposed to further Russian attacks.
