The Vetëvendosje Movement (VV) failed in three consecutive attempts to elect a new Speaker of the Assembly. During today’s session, none of the proposed candidates received the necessary votes, prompting the presiding member to adjourn the session until two days from now.
A Day of Failed Votes
The day began with VV re-proposing Hekuran Murati for the position. He failed to secure the required votes, with 55 deputies voting in favor, 46 against, and five abstaining.
Following his failure, VV then nominated Arbërie Nagavci. Like Murati, she also received 55 votes in favor, with 47 against and four abstentions.
A third candidate, Dimal Basha, was then put forward, but his election also failed. It was 57 votes in favor, 24 against and 4 abstaining votes for Basha, after that the session was ended by the presiding member, Avni Dehari who announced that the session will continue on Tuesday 26 of August at 11 AM.
Ongoing Political Stalemate
This is not the first time the party has been unable to get its candidate elected to the post. Previous proposals, including Albulena Haxhiu and Donika Gërvalla, also failed to secure enough votes. The opposition has repeatedly stated that it will not vote for any candidate who is part of the current government.
