A powerful earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck near Nea Styra in Evia, Greece, shortly after midnight, shaking Athens and surrounding areas.
According to the Geodynamic Institute of Greece, the initial quake was recorded at 12:27 AM, followed by approximately 25 strong aftershocks until 6:00 AM. These aftershocks ranged in magnitude from 1.3 to 2.8, with authorities warning that a stronger aftershock of 4.0–4.5 cannot be ruled out.
Greek seismology expert Professor Efthymis Lekkas stated that the earthquake’s epicenter was located offshore between Nea Styra and Shinia, an area with no history of strong seismic activity. He noted that the midnight quake was likely the main shock and emphasized ongoing monitoring by experts.
Lekkas urged the public to remain calm and follow the guidance of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection and the Hellenic Seismic Protection Organization (OASP).
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure safety in affected areas.
