The United Nations General Assembly is expected to vote this Friday on a resolution proposed by France and Saudi Arabia, aiming to revive the two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians while excluding Hamas from the political process.

The document condemns Hamas’ attacks on October 7, 2023, calls for the release of all hostages, and urges an end to the war in Gaza.

The statement emphasizes that Hamas must end its rule over the territory and hand over weapons to the Palestinian Authority, with international support, as a step toward establishing a sovereign and independent Palestinian state.

The resolution also calls for “collective action to end the war in Gaza and achieve a just, peaceful, and sustainable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on effective implementation of the two-state solution.”

The Israeli government has strongly opposed the creation of a Palestinian state and criticized the UN for focusing on its actions, accusing the organization of failing to condemn Hamas. Tel Aviv described the possible recognition of a Palestinian state as a “reward for terror.”

Today’s vote precedes an international summit in New York on September 22, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, where French President Emmanuel Macron has promised that Paris will officially recognize the Palestinian state. Several other countries have expressed similar positions.
