Acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, expressed his condolences on the passing of Abdi Baleta, highlighting his valuable contributions to politics and journalism, reports Sinjali.
Kurti stated that Baleta was one of the foremost experts in international law and geopolitics.
According to him, Baleta’s journalistic work represents a true school of thought for Albanian political and strategic thinking and is a testament to a life dedicated to the nation.
Full statement:
Abdi Baleta was among the politicians whose name became widely known to Kosovars as soon as the communist regime fell in Albania. Some had already heard of him when he represented Albania at the United Nations, while the broader public came to know him through his speeches in the Albanian Parliament and his writings in the press, which primarily focused on the unresolved Albanian question. He was a voice notable for the strength of his arguments and the determination with which he defended national identity and the Albanian people’s right to self-determination and national unification.
Baleta was a deep scholar of international law and geopolitical currents. Some of his writings from the 1990s on Kosovo were published in the book Kosova: From Dayton to Rambouillet. He continued to comment on developments in the Albanian-speaking world and globally through his articles in Bota Sot (Pristina), Rimëkëmbja (Tirana), Shenja (Skopje), and other publications.
In my meetings with him in Tirana, I observed the passion with which he defended his views, grounded in his extensive diplomatic experience and erudition; his joy at Kosovo’s and the Albanian nation’s progress; his frustration at the obstacles that Albanians still face; and his enduring belief that justice ultimately prevails. His journalistic work is a true school of thought for Albanian political and strategic thinking and a testimony to a life dedicated to the nation.
